On the morning of the incident, around 5:40 a.m., Cross Lake RCMP received a report of an aggravated assault at a home in the community. Preliminary investigations revealed that Joshua Paupanekis, a 39-year-old man, entered a residence and brutally attacked a 24-year-old occupant with a hammer.

Paupanekis was reportedly armed with a knife during the attack. Following the assault, he abducted a 20-year-old woman identified as Raeanne Thomas. The two were observed fleeing on foot from the scene.

Ongoing Search Efforts

A comprehensive search operation is currently underway, incorporating various police units, including Police Dog Services. This search is taking place within the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, located approximately 500 kilometers north of Winnipeg.
