Wilfrid Laurier University Unveils Expansive Sports Dome

Wilfrid Laurier University has introduced a new multi-use sports dome at University Stadium, located on Seagram Drive. This facility opened its doors to the public on February 1 and is set to accommodate various indoor sports activities.

Features of the New Sports Dome

The expansive air-supported structure reaches over 80 feet in height and covers an area of 118,750 square feet. It features a state-of-the-art turf field designed for a variety of athletic programs.

Significance of the Dome

According to Laurier President Deborah MacLatchy, this dome is the largest seasonal sports dome in Canadian university athletics. It ranks as the second-largest air-supported structure in the country.

Partnerships and Community Impact

  • The dome was developed through collaboration among several local entities.
  • Key partners include the Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union, Laurier Athletics, and the City of Waterloo.
  • Waterloo Mayor Dorothy McCabe emphasized the importance of such partnerships for enhancing community facilities.

Seasonal Operation

The sports dome will be erected every December and is expected to operate until the May long weekend, adapting as weather conditions change.

Athletic Enhancements at Laurier

This new dome is part of the broader Seagram Drive Athletics & Recreation Project. Recently completed enhancements include:

  • Demolition of the old grandstands.
  • Installation of a new turf field.
  • Upgraded field lighting and a new LED videoboard scoreboard.
  • Seating arrangements capable of accommodating 3,000 to 5,000 spectators.

Programming Opportunities

Throughout its first operational year, the dome is projected to host more than 1,800 hours of programming, benefiting both university teams and local community members.

Wilfrid Laurier University’s new sports dome not only enhances the campus facilities but also reflects a commitment to promoting athletic excellence and community engagement.
