Devon Coastal Road Collapses Into the Sea
Recent severe weather has wreaked havoc on the A379 coastal road in Devon. This vital route connects Torcross and Slapton, near Dartmouth. It suffered significant damage due to multiple storms, leading to its partial collapse into the sea.
Storms Affecting Devon’s Coastal Infrastructure
The A379 road has faced relentless attacks from nature. A series of three named storms—Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra—struck earlier this year. The devastating combination of heavy rain and strong waves has severely compromised the road’s structure.
Consequently, images from the recent incident show sections of the road, alongside a public car park, have crumbled and fallen into the ocean. Reports illustrate the erosion has been exacerbated by the ongoing downpours, with conditions remaining precarious.
Economic Impact and Government Response
Devon County Council estimates the repair costs could reach tens of millions of pounds. Liberal Democrat MP Caroline Voaden expressed her concern regarding the community’s safety and the need for urgent government assistance. She noted, “One of my team is on the ground now and said the force of the waves is shaking the road. It’s terrifying.”
In her calls for action, Voaden emphasized, “Protection measures are needed, but government support is simply not there. Billions have been dedicated to Northern Powerhouse Rail while our coastal communities are left defenceless.”
Local Leadership’s Call for Action
Devon County Council leader Julian Brazil also voiced his concerns at Westminster. He remarked, “It’s devastating for the local community. Our priority is the families affected by this situation.”
- Storms causing damage: Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra.
- Estimated repair costs: Tens of millions of pounds.
- Local official comments on urgent need for federal support.
This isn’t the first time the A379 has faced such challenges. It was previously washed away during Storm Emma in March 2018. After months of repairs, the road reopened later that same year. Now, with recent storm damage, the future of this crucial road remains uncertain.
