Aragorn Recast in ‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’

Viggo Mortensen will not return as Aragorn in the upcoming Middle-earth film. Andy Serkis will direct and again portray Gollum.

Casting shake-up

Serkis told Filmogaz.com that the production will recast Aragorn. He said casting is underway and the search is active.

So far, only one additional name is confirmed. Oscar winner Kate Winslet has joined the project, Variety reported last month.

The Aragorn recast is one of the production’s highest-profile tasks. Finding a replacement carries clear expectations from fans and filmmakers.

Warner Bros. has not released a full cast list. Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen are circulating in industry reports as potential returns.

Wood told hosts on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that replacing Aragorn will be difficult. He also said he would prefer not to be recast as Frodo.

Wood added he looks forward to seeing familiar moments on screen. He mentioned the thrill of recognizing iconic characters in cinema.

Peter Jackson is producing with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The trio return as creative partners on the new film.

Warner Bros. and New Line are developing two new Rings movies. The Hunt for Gollum is preparing to begin filming this year.

Another Middle-earth project is in development. Stephen Colbert co-wrote that screenplay with his son Peter McGee and Philippa Boyens.

The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to hit theaters on December 17, 2027. Producers say the film will bridge The Hobbit and the original trilogy.
