Eglinton Crosstown Launches Sunday with Free Rides, Announces TTC CEO

The Eglinton Crosstown LRT is set to launch on Sunday, February 8, providing a significant boost to Toronto’s public transit. The Transportation Toronto Commission (TTC) has confirmed that passenger fares will be waived for the opening day, allowing riders to experience the line for free. This long-awaited launch comes after over a decade of construction that began in 2011.

Eglinton Crosstown Details

During the recent TTC Board meeting, CEO Mandeep Lali announced a phased opening plan for the new transit line, designated as Line 5. This approach allows for a careful assessment of the service’s performance and the implementation of necessary upgrades. Lali explained that the gradual rollout aims to incorporate customer feedback and manage operational challenges effectively.

Operational Features

  • Line 5 runs between Mount Dennis in the west and Kennedy Station in Scarborough.
  • The line includes 25 stops, with more than half of them located underground.
  • Transit signal priority (TSP) will be in effect to improve travel times by giving light rail vehicles priority at intersections.

Despite the exciting launch, the new line will operate on reduced hours initially, and further details about the schedule have not yet been released. Enhanced features, including additional software upgrades and improvements in speed, are expected in March and May.

Impact on Existing Transit Routes

With the introduction of Line 5, the TTC has announced that 35 bus routes will undergo changes. Sixteen of these adjustments were implemented in the fall, laying the groundwork for the transition to the new light rail service.

Passengers should note that fare payment will need to be made on surface platforms rather than directly on the vehicles, a shift aimed at streamlining operations along the Crosstown. Despite previous delays preventing the original 2020 opening date, the Eglinton Crosstown is finally here, promising to enhance mobility across Toronto.
