Eglinton Crosstown LRT Set to Launch This Sunday, Confirms TTC
TTC CEO Mandeep Lali has announced that the Eglinton Crosstown LRT will officially open this Sunday, providing free rides on its inaugural day. This marks a significant milestone after over a decade of construction and testing on the crucial transit line in Toronto.
Eglinton Crosstown LRT: A History of Challenges
The Eglinton Crosstown LRT has encountered numerous delays since construction commenced nearly 14 years ago. Issues ranged from legal disputes to ongoing conflicts between contractors and Metrolinx, leading to significant disruptions along Eglinton Avenue. Many businesses faced closures due to construction-related congestion.
Recent Developments and Testing
- In December 2025, Metrolinx declared the line substantially complete.
- Recent safety tests involved simulations with over 1,000 TTC staff members.
- There are no outstanding safety concerns, according to Lali.
The provincial government handed over the responsibility for final testing to the TTC as the project neared completion. Although the original goal was to launch the line in late December, conservative projections pushed the opening to early February amid pressures heightened by the problematic launch of the Finch West LRT.
Learning from Past Experiences
Following the Finch West LRT’s troubled debut, which included frequent breakdowns and slow travel speeds, TTC officials are determined to apply lessons learned. Metrolinx CEO Michael Lindsay noted that Eglinton is expected to present fewer operational challenges compared to Finch.
As Toronto prepares for the Eglinton Crosstown LRT’s launch, the city is hopeful that it will enhance public transit and provide a reliable service for commuters in the years to come.
