Eau Claire Provides Free Bus Rides for Transit Equity Day
Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is commemorating Transit Equity Day by offering free bus rides on February 4. This initiative honors Rosa Parks, a pivotal figure in the civil rights movement known for her stand against racial segregation in public transportation.
Free Bus Rides and Services
On this special day, all bus rides, including paratransit services that typically cost $1.75, will be provided at no charge. The Chippewa Valley Transit Alliance and JONAH (Joining Our Neighbors, Advancing Hope) are sponsoring this initiative to promote transit accessibility.
Community Support and Accessibility
- Phil Swanhorst from the Eau Claire Transit Commission emphasized the importance of public transportation in the community.
- Beyond this observance, Eau Claire Transit offers various accessibility programs, such as vouchers for unhoused residents and reduced fare cards.
- Buses are equipped to kneel, facilitating easier access for individuals with mobility devices.
Florian Skwierczynski, a bus driver, advocates for affordable transit options. He stated, “It’s important to have affordable, accessible transportation because people are looking for an alternative to get to where they need to go.”
Environmental Impact
During the event, Swanhorst remarked that public transit also contributes positively to the environment. He posed a thought-provoking question, asking why there should be 20 cars on the road when one bus could suffice.
Commemorating Rosa Parks
In remembrance of Rosa Parks, transit workers will honor her legacy by marking a seat on each bus. Parks famously refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1955, advocating for equitable public transport for all.
As the event approaches, Skwierczynski encourages residents to take advantage of the free rides. He assures that “all of the operators here in Eau Claire are just wonderful people willing to answer all your questions.”
Celebration Details
The city will hold a celebration at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 4. Join the community in recognizing Transit Equity Day while enjoying free transportation throughout Eau Claire.
