Firefox Introduces New Controls to Disable AI Features
The Firefox browser is enhancing user control by introducing options to disable AI features. Mozilla announced that users can now choose to turn off various AI enhancements that have been implemented over recent months.
Firefox’s New AI Control Features
Firefox users may opt to disable the following AI capabilities:
- Translations: These assist users in browsing the web in their preferred languages.
- Alt Text in PDFs: This feature adds accessibility descriptions to images within PDF documents.
- AI-Enhanced Tab Grouping: Suggestions for related tabs and group names are provided.
- Link Previews: Users can see key points of links before clicking on them.
- AI Chatbot in Sidebar: An integrated chatbot option is available for users while they browse, featuring tools like Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.
User Customization
Users can disable these AI features either collectively or individually. This allows for a personalized browsing experience, catering to individual preferences regarding AI functionality.
Future AI Controls
As more AI features are introduced in the browser, users will have the option to opt out of them. A primary toggle named “Block AI Enhancements” will disable all existing and future AI options, including pop-up reminders about using these features.
Release Date
The new AI controls will be available in Firefox version 148, which is expected to start rolling out to users on February 24, 2024. Mozilla aims to strike a balance between developing innovative AI tools for enthusiasts while respecting the preferences of those who wish to disable them.
