On Sunday afternoon, residents in the southeast Denver metro area experienced significant power outages affecting numerous communities. Xcel Energy confirmed awareness of the issue, which originated at one of its substations. Crews were dispatched to repair the infrastructure and investigate the cause.

Approximately 148,000 customers of Xcel Energy experienced outages during the peak of the situation. By 4:45 p.m., around 40,000 customers were still without power. This outage extended beyond Xcel Energy’s service area, impacting CORE Electric as well.

Emergency Services Response
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office reported an influx of calls regarding the outages. They advised residents to reserve 911 for emergencies only and to utilize the non-emergency line at (303) 660-7500 for less urgent matters. Meanwhile, the Parker Police Department’s emergency and non-emergency lines were temporarily out of service but were restored by approximately 4:25 p.m.
Aurora’s 911 services were also briefly disrupted by the outage, although functionality has since been restored. Denver International Airport acknowledged the impact of the power outage, informing passengers that crews were mobilized to restore power to train systems and other operational segments.
