Duke Energy Calls Carolinas to Cut Energy Use

Extreme cold weather is significantly impacting energy consumption in the Carolinas. Forecasts indicate temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below average. Consequently, Duke Energy is urging local customers to reduce their energy usage to alleviate demand on the power grid.

Duke Energy’s Call for Energy Conservation

On February 2, between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m., Duke Energy is asking all Carolinas customers to voluntarily cut back on energy consumption. This initiative aims to minimize the risk of temporary power outages during this critical period.

Steps to Reduce Energy Use

Duke Energy recommends several strategies for customers to help decrease the burden on the grid:

  • Adjust your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting.
  • Avoid operating major appliances, such as washing machines, dryers, and dishwashers during the designated hours.
  • Turn off unnecessary devices, plug-ins, and lights.
  • Electric vehicle owners should charge their vehicles during midday when demand is lower.

Messages from Duke Energy Officials

Gerald Wilson, Duke Energy’s vice president of grid operations, highlighted the importance of these efforts, stating, “We know it’s inconvenient to reduce electric use, but it makes a real difference.” He assured customers that the company is taking all necessary measures to meet their energy needs, including maximizing generation capacity and collaborating with large commercial customers.
