Iran Vows Retaliation Against Europe: “They Shot Themselves in the Foot”

Iran has officially classified the military forces of European Union member states as terrorist organizations. This declaration was made by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, on February 1. This response follows the EU’s recent decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist group.

Iran’s Reaction to EU’s Decision

Ghalibaf criticized the European Union for succumbing to U.S. pressure. He stated that, in their attempt to target the Revolutionary Guard—which he claims is a significant barrier against the spread of terrorism in Europe—Europeans have harmed their own interests. He indicated that the EU’s actions echo American influence and disregard the welfare of their own citizens.

Parliamentary Demonstrations

  • During the session, Iranian lawmakers chanted slogans such as “death to America” and “death to Israel.”
  • These expressions of sentiment were in reaction to the EU’s classification of the Revolutionary Guard.

EU’s Justification

European officials defended their stance, stating that the designation of the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization is a response to the repression faced by protesters in Iran. Kaja Kallas, the head of EU diplomacy, emphasized that such repression should not go unanswered and highlighted the catastrophic trajectory of regimes that harm their citizens.

Consequences of Listing

As a result of being listed as a terrorist organization, the Revolutionary Guard will face frozen assets and financial repercussions across Europe. Kallas likened the Guard’s designation to those of Al-Qaeda, Hamas, and ISIS, underlining the seriousness of the classification.

U.S. Military Considerations

Donald Trump has indicated that the United States might consider a military strike on Iran if negotiations fail. His comments suggest a desire for Iran to abandon its nuclear ambitions, although he noted ongoing discussions between the U.S. and Iranian representatives.

Negotiations Uncertainty

Ali Larijani, a senior security official in Iran, mentioned the ongoing work towards a structural agreement regarding negotiations with the U.S. However, there have been no confirmed direct discussions between the two nations as of yet.

These developments highlight the escalating tensions between Iran, the European Union, and the United States, raising concerns over future diplomatic relationships and regional stability.
