Mexico Challenges Dominican Republic with Two Home Teams in Caribbean Series
In a historic moment for baseball, Mexico is set to challenge the Dominican Republic in the 2026 Caribbean Series, hosted on home soil. This event, scheduled from February 1 to February 7, 2026, will take place at the Panamericano Stadium in Zapopan, near Guadalajara. Mexico will field two teams: Charros de Jalisco and Tomateros de Culiacán.
Caribbean Series Overview
The Caribbean Series has long been known for its unpredictability. Traditionally, local teams struggle to secure championships in their home countries. Out of 67 Caribbean Series editions, only 15 teams have won while playing at home. Salvador Escobar, president of the Mexican Pacific League, noted, “It is not easy to be champions in your own territory; there is a natural psychological pressure.”
Double Representation of Mexico
Due to political instability in Venezuela, Mexico emerged as the host nation for this year’s series. Alongside Mexico, teams from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Panama will participate. This year’s format will feature five teams, enhancing the opportunity for an economically successful event.
- Teams participating:
- Mexico: Charros de Jalisco (Mexico Rojo) and Tomateros de Culiacán (Mexico Verde)
- Dominican Republic: Leones del Escogido
- Puerto Rico: Cangrejeros de Santurce
- Panama: Federales de Chiriquí
Historical Context
In the past, Mexico has previously hosted the Caribbean Series multiple times. Since the recent format changes in 2013, Mexico has served as the venue for six out of 14 editions, with an additional series planned for Hermosillo in 2027. The nation has a strong fan base and infrastructure, making it a prime candidate for hosting such high-profile events.
Panamericano Stadium Features
The Panamericano Stadium boasts a capacity of 15,500 and is equipped with modern amenities:
- 67 screens
- 30 luxury suites
- Five restaurants
- Comprehensive internet access
- Press area for 150 journalists
- Eight broadcasting booths
Seeking Championship Glory
Both Mexican teams aim to win the Caribbean Series at home, which is a rare feat. Historically, Mexico has only won the championship twice in its 17 home appearances. The most recent championship for Mexico came in 2016, thanks to the Venados de Mazatlán, who claimed victory in Santo Domingo.
Last year’s series saw Mexico, represented by Charros de Jalisco, finishing as runners-up after an impressive start. They lost a close final against the Dominican Leones del Escogido by a single run (1-0).
Escobar expressed a desire for a thrilling finale, potentially featuring Mexico Rojo against Mexico Verde. “We are eager to reclaim the championship at home. It’s our time to shine again in the Caribbean Series,” he added.
