Chadi Riad: A Potential Return to La Liga

As the transfer deadline approaches, rumors suggest that Chadi Riad could return to La Liga. The 22-year-old Moroccan defender started his career in Mallorca and later developed within FC Barcelona’s youth system. His recent connection to Real Mallorca has garnered significant attention.

Riad is currently under contract with Crystal Palace.

Diario de Mallorca reported that Mallorca aims to bolster their defense, having conceded 33 goals in 21 matches. The urgency to improve their backline has been exacerbated by Antonio Raíllo’s clavicle injury and Marash Kumbulla’s limited playing time.

Riad’s Development and Previous Clubs

Riad was initially part of Mallorca’s youth academy.
He joined Barcelona during the 2019-20 season and spent four years with the club.
Under coach Xavi Hernández, he made his first-team debut in the 2022-23 season.

After showing promise, Real Betis expressed interest in Riad, leading to a transfer valued at 3 million euros. He excelled at Betis, prompting Crystal Palace to pay 15 million euros for him in summer 2024. This deal also ensured Barcelona received 50% due to a clause in the contract.

Current Status at Crystal Palace

Despite his potential, Riad has struggled for playing time at Crystal Palace this season, participating in only 131 minutes so far. Out of these, he played just 14 minutes in the Premier League.

With current challenges at Crystal Palace, a return to Spain might offer Chadi Riad the opportunity he needs to revive his career, particularly with a club where his journey began.
