Demond Wilson, Star of “Sanford and Son,” Passes Away at 79
Demond Wilson, the iconic actor recognized for his role as Lamont Sanford in the beloved 1970s sitcom “Sanford and Son,” has passed away at the age of 79. His publicist, Mark Goldman, confirmed the news on Saturday, stating that the family is mourning their loss and requests privacy during this difficult time.
Wilson died on Friday due to complications from cancer at his residence in Palm Springs, California. His son, Demond Wilson Jr., shared this information with TMZ.
Demond Wilson’s Career Highlights
Born in Georgia, Wilson raised in New York City, had a passion for performing arts from an early age. He made his Broadway debut at just four years old in a revival of “The Green Pastures,” featuring notable figures like William Marshall and Ossie Davis. By age 12, he was dancing at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theater.
Wilson’s journey included serving in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, during which he was stationed in Vietnam. Upon his return to New York, he participated in various Broadway productions before heading to Los Angeles.
Breakthrough Role in “Sanford and Son”
Wilson’s breakthrough came in 1971 when he appeared in an episode of “All in the Family.” This role led to his casting as Lamont Sanford, the son of Fred G. Sanford, portrayed by Redd Foxx, in “Sanford and Son.” The show became a tenured hit, running for six seasons.
Despite its success, Wilson declined a solo lead role after Foxx left amid a salary dispute. Following this, he starred in “Baby … I’m Back,” which unfortunately lasted only 13 episodes, and later featured in “The New Odd Couple,” which was also short-lived, concluding after 18 episodes.
Personal Struggles and Later Life
In the 1980s, Wilson overcame a cocaine addiction and embraced spirituality by becoming an ordained interdenominational minister. He authored a book titled “Second Banana: The Bitter Sweet Memories of the Sanford & Son Years” in 2009, reflecting on his career and experiences.
Wilson is survived by his wife and their six children. Mark Goldman, who worked closely with him for 15 years, expressed the profound impact of Wilson’s legacy, reiterating that he will always be remembered.
The community extends its sympathy and support to Wilson’s family as they navigate this loss.
