McKenna Shines in Outdoor Performance at Penn State’s Beaver Stadium

Outdoor hockey reached new heights recently at Penn State’s Beaver Stadium, where a game brought together nearly 75,000 fans. This impressive turnout marked a significant achievement in the growth of Penn State’s hockey program, highlighting its rise since moving to Division I status in 2012.

McKenna’s Outdoor Performance

A standout player, McKenna, reflected on the unique experience of skating onto the ice in front of such a massive crowd. Growing up in Whitehorse, Yukon, he has a deep-rooted love for outdoor hockey. However, skating in a stadium filled with fans was a thrilling first for him. “Walking through those gates was pretty special,” McKenna shared. “The atmosphere was amazing.”

Coaching Perspective

Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky also embraced the moment. Since taking charge in 2011, he has witnessed significant milestones, including the opening of Pegula Ice Arena in 2012 and the program’s first Frozen Four appearance last season. Gadowsky was overwhelmed by the crowd’s enthusiasm, stating, “I couldn’t believe it was a hockey game. It just blew me away.”

Hard Work and Dedication

The outdoor game represented years of hard work and dedication from everyone involved in building the program. Gadowsky acknowledged the contributions of those who supported its journey, including Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula, who has been a crucial benefactor. “It’s impossible not to reflect on all the people that worked so hard for this moment,” he noted.

Despite the Outcome

Though the weekend ended with a tough 6-3 loss to Michigan State, the players still viewed the event as a monumental occasion. Captain Dowiak, who had three assists during the game, remarked, “That was the coolest environment I will ever play in. I couldn’t be prouder to be a Penn Stater.”

McKenna’s Future

At just 18 years old, McKenna is making a name for himself. Currently, he ranks third among NCAA freshmen with 32 points, including 11 goals and 21 assists in 24 games. With the highest ranking among North American skaters in NHL Central Scouting’s midterm assessment, he is poised to enter the NHL soon.

In spite of the game’s outcome, McKenna cherished the opportunity to be part of the Penn State community. His sentiment captures the essence of the day, as he shared, “To just be a part of this community, I’m a forever Penn Stater and that was an amazing time.”
