Cortina Cable Car Delayed for Winter Games Start, Letter Reveals

The Cortina cable car project, crucial for transporting spectators to the women’s Alpine skiing events, has been delayed. This announcement has raised concerns for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, scheduled from February 6 to 22.

Cable Car Delay Affects Olympic Preparations

The Apollonio–Socrepes lift, an essential infrastructure piece for the Games, is facing significant delays. Organisers are now exploring alternatives to manage transportation effectively.

Background of the Apollonio–Socrepes Lift

  • Location: Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy
  • Purpose: Transport spectators directly from the town to the skiing slopes
  • Concerns: Safety issues in a landslide-prone area

Despite ongoing work, the state-backed agency Simico recently informed organisers that the gondola lift would not be operational in time. This development is particularly troubling as the opening of the Games approaches.

Impact on Transport and Organisation

In a letter dated January 29, Chief Games Operations Officer Andrea Francisi highlighted the strategic importance of the lift for the Olympic mobility plan. It is vital for facilitating smooth transport during the events, which also include curling, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton.

The delay is expected to create considerable organisational challenges. As a precautionary measure, Cortina’s organisers have requested local authorities to close schools on February 10 and 12, with a potential closure on February 11, to alleviate congestion during peak Olympic days.

Logistical Adjustments During the Games

Cortina’s transport infrastructure is limited, with the town lacking a railway station. Access to the area can be slow, primarily relying on road transport. In efforts to manage traffic, the following measures will be implemented:

  • Permits will be required for vehicles accessing certain town areas.
  • Designated parking will be available for event-goers, who must use shuttle buses to reach venues.

The Milano Cortina organising committee is closely monitoring the situation regarding the cable car. Ticket sales for the events in Cortina have been limited until there is clarity about the lift’s operational status.

With the Winter Olympics just days away, the successful resolution of these transport issues remains critical for the smooth running of events in Cortina. As preparations continue, the emphasis on safety and efficiency is paramount to ensure an enjoyable experience for both athletes and spectators.
