GFA, Pohnpei Soccer Launch Kids Club to Boost FSM Football Development

The Pohnpei Soccer Association (PSA) is embarking on an exciting initiative called the Kids Club, aimed at enhancing football development in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). This grassroots effort began with a small group of mothers wishing to engage their children in football and has grown significantly.

Growth of the Pohnpei Kids Club

Currently, the Kids Club serves around 300 children across eight teams in local school tournaments. Giulio Biddau, vice president of the PSA Kids Club, expressed optimism regarding future growth during a recent meeting with the Guam Football Association (GFA) president, Valentino San Gil.

Biddau emphasized the importance of partnering with experienced organizations such as GFA and the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association (NMIFA). These collaborations are essential for improving the football landscape in Pohnpei and the broader FSM.

Plans for Development

  • Coaching Courses: The PSA plans to send grassroots coaches to attend coaching courses in Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.
  • Increased Coaching Staff: As more children show interest in football, the need for additional coaches becomes apparent.

Since its inception, the program has attracted a significant number of young footballers. In its first year, 91 children aged 5 to 14 expressed interest in participating. As the program evolved, it organized competitive tournaments featuring eight teams, each with a roster of 30 players or more.

Importance of Football for Social Change

GFA president San Gil shared his commitment to supporting initiatives like the PSA Kids Club. He believes that football is more than just a game; it acts as a vehicle for social change in local communities.

Biddau, originally from Italy, was inspired by the potential he saw in Pohnpei. He noted that football requires minimal resources to start—just a ball and something to serve as goalposts. As interest grows, the development of better infrastructure will follow.

Broader Goals Beyond Football

The mission of the Kids Club extends beyond sport. Biddau aims to teach participants valuable life skills, including:

  • Improved personal hygiene
  • Better dietary choices
  • Long-term thinking and planning

Football serves as an engaging medium for instilling these important lessons in children.

Upcoming Coaching Opportunities

Those interested in coaching can sign up for the next GFA Youth Coaching Certificate course scheduled for March 13 to 15. The course will be conducted by coach educator Manfred Preschern. To register, visit Filmogaz.com and follow the provided link.
