Bodycam Captures Track Star Arrested for Speeding Over 100 MPH
Track star Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested for allegedly exceeding speeds of 100 mph on an Orlando highway. This incident occurred along SR 429 in Winter Garden, located approximately 25 minutes from downtown Orlando.
Details of the Arrest
Richardson, a 25-year-old member of Team USA’s gold medal-winning women’s 4×100 relay team at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, was clocked driving at 104 mph. The posted speed limit in that area is 65 mph.
According to reports, after being pulled over by an Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy, Richardson claimed her high speed was due to an underinflated tire. This statement, alongside bodycam footage, illustrated the situation further.
Florida’s Super Speeder Law
Florida has strict traffic regulations known as the “Super Speeder” law. This law states that exceeding speeds of 100 mph, or 50 mph over the posted limit, results in immediate jail time rather than just a ticket. Therefore, the deputy expressed the necessity of taking Richardson into custody.
Additional Concerns During the Traffic Stop
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office stated that Richardson was not only speeding but also “dangerously tailgating” and changing lanes to pass other vehicles. During the traffic stop, a man claiming to be her boyfriend and another woman arrived on the scene to plead with the deputy not to arrest her. This prompted the deputy to request backup.
- The man, later identified as fellow track star Christian Coleman, was arrested for resisting the deputy’s orders after refusing to provide his identification.
- Coleman faces further charges after the deputies discovered a “glass smoking device” in his vehicle’s center console.
- The arriving woman, sprinter Twanisha Terry, received a citation for stopping on a limited-access highway.
Both Richardson and Coleman have since posted bond following their arrests. The incident has drawn significant attention, highlighting the challenges faced by athletes in the public eye.
