Councillors Demand Compensation for Transit Riders After Recent Disruption

Recent disruptions in OC Transpo services have prompted two Ottawa city councillors to advocate for compensation options for affected riders. The service disruptions included a notable incident involving a halted LRT train on Line 1, causing widespread issues for commuters.

Councillors Propose Compensation for Transit Riders

On Wednesday, Councillors Sean Devine and Shawn Menard introduced separate motions aimed at urging OC Transpo to consider various compensation methods. They suggested options such as refunds, discounts, or fare credits for customers experiencing significant delays.

Arguments for Accountability

Councillor Devine emphasized the importance of accountability within public transit. He pointed out that transit systems in other cities successfully implement service guarantees through financial compensations. He stated, “Customers have every right to expect if they pay for a service, they get that service. If they don’t, they deserve a refund.”

Opposing Viewpoint from the Mayor

Mayor Mark Sutcliffe offered a contrasting perspective. He believes that rather than focusing on compensation, the transit system requires additional investments to enhance service quality. “I am determined to invest more money in public transit, not less,” Sutcliffe remarked, highlighting his intent to prioritize budget allocation for improvements.

OC Transpo’s Current Challenges

In light of ongoing issues, OC Transpo has temporarily removed around 70 percent of its O-Train fleet from service due to mechanical problems with wheel assemblies. This decision has raised concerns about potential delays during peak commuting hours.

Upcoming Council Debate

  • The motions proposed by Councillors Devine and Menard will be debated at a council meeting scheduled for February 11.

As the situation unfolds, riders will be keenly observing how OC Transpo addresses these concerns and whether compensation will be instituted following the disruptions.
