Fancsy Family Hospital Construction in Windsor Achieves Major Milestone

A significant advancement has been made in the construction of the Fancsy Family Hospital in Windsor-Essex. This multi-billion-dollar project announced the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to prequalify construction teams. The initiative is a collaboration between Infrastructure Ontario, Windsor Regional Hospital, and the Ministry of Health.

Phase 2 Overview

Phase 2 is the largest component of the project. It will feature a five-storey Diagnostic and Treatment Block. This facility will include:

  • Emergency and Trauma Services
  • Regional Cancer Services
  • Surgical Services
  • Women’s and Children’s Services
  • Advanced Diagnostics
  • Central Utility Plant

Brandon Bailey, Vice President of Redevelopment at Windsor Regional Hospital, confirmed that shortlisted teams will be invited to a design competition. This process will take about a year, aiming for a preferred proponent to be identified.

Construction Timeline and Strategy

Groundbreaking for Phase 2 is anticipated by the end of 2027. To deliver value and ensure trade availability, the construction is divided into three phases:

  1. Phase 1: Construction of a three-storey Education and Administrative Centre, a simulation centre, and a 700-vehicle parking garage.
  2. Phase 2: The focus on the Diagnostic and Treatment Block.
  3. Phase 3: A nine-storey Inpatient Tower housing the hospital’s inpatient beds and support services.

EllisDon Construction has been tasked as the construction manager for Phase 1, set to begin in mid-2026. The RFQ for Phase 3 will be released subsequently.

Local Impact and Workforce Engagement

At peak construction, over 1,200 contractors are expected to work on the site. Bailey emphasized the importance of local participation. The staggered approach aims to facilitate maximum involvement from the community’s labor force.

Site and Expansion Details

The hospital’s construction is located at County Road 42 and the 9th Concession, near Windsor Airport. Once completed, the Fancsy Family Hospital will provide 50% more space than the current combined areas of the Ouellette Campus and Met Campus.

The estimated cost of the entire project remains undisclosed, as it approaches the bidding phase. However, it is expected to reach into the billions. This phased approach allows for the potential of a ‘soft opening’ before all components are finalized.
