Colombian Lawmaker Among 15 Missing After Plane Vanishes

A passenger plane operated by Satena has vanished in a remote jungle area close to Colombia’s eastern border with Venezuela. The aircraft, which was en route from Cucuta to Ocana, was carrying 15 individuals, including two crew members.

Search and Rescue Efforts Underway

Search and rescue teams are currently mobilized to locate the missing plane. The disappearance occurred in a dense jungle region, complicating operations due to challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions.

Passenger Details

  • Among the passengers was Diogenes Quintero, a Colombian lawmaker.
  • Also present was Carlos Salcedo Salazar, a candidate for the same congressional seat.

Flight Information

According to local authorities, the plane lost radar coverage shortly before it was expected to land in Ocana. There was a sudden drop in altitude recorded 11 minutes before the incident.

Investigation and Communication

Maria Fernanda Rojas, Colombia’s Minister of Transport, confirmed through social media that the Accident Investigation Directorate is focused on gathering information regarding the loss of communication. A Unified Command Post has been activated for this emergency response.

Context of the Region

The Catatumbo region, where the plane disappeared, is known for its significant coca cultivation, which feeds into the drug trade. This area has historically been a conflict zone, exacerbated by its proximity to the Venezuelan border.

Recent Conflicts

In January of the previous year, violence between the National Liberation Army (ELN) and a dissident FARC group led to the displacement of over 50,000 individuals. The route from Cucuta to Ocana has only been operational since June 2025, providing crucial connectivity to a region traditionally underserved by infrastructure.
