Alice Springs Mall Project Signals Promising Future, Says Council Chief

Significant redevelopment projects are poised to reshape key areas in Alice Springs over the next few years. These initiatives aim to enhance the town’s future and improve its public facilities.

Alice Springs Mall Project and Its Importance

The Alice Springs Town Council has initiated plans to revitalize vital locations, including the renowned Todd Mall, the public library, and the visitor information center. The council’s chief executive, Andrew Wilsmore, emphasized that these projects reflect confidence in the town’s future, especially following the cancellation of the multimillion-dollar Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery.

Todd Mall Redevelopment Details

The Todd Mall redevelopment is a flagship project, with an estimated cost of $20 million. Key features of this plan include:

  • Replacement of red bricks with white pavers.
  • Removal of 12 existing trees, with 20 new ones planted.
  • Installation of a digital display board and a 10-meter sculpture.
  • New seating, lighting, garbage bins, bike racks, and restrooms.
  • Gum tree-shaped arbours to provide shade.

This redevelopment is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026. Wilsmore noted that several additional shovel-ready projects are also being planned around Leichhardt Terrace and Parsons Street, contingent on securing further funding.

Yeperenye Shopping Centre Enhancements

Another significant undertaking involves the Yeperenye Shopping Centre, located between Hartley and Bath streets. The redevelopment, costing $27 million, will feature:

  • A four-level car park with over 200 spaces.
  • A modern loading dock and click-and-collect facilities.
  • Office spaces and a rooftop bar and restaurant.

Managing director Owen Cole expressed optimism about attracting both tourists and locals to the new non-licensed restaurant. Woolworths has been a staple in the centre for nearly 40 years but plans to relocate to Alice Plaza by February 2028, leaving an opening for potential new supermarkets.

New Library and Visitor Centre

The Alice Springs Town Council is also allocating $20 million for a new public library at the Civic Centre site, addressing the current space limitations. The new library will feature:

  • Increased seating and study areas.
  • Collaborative spaces and larger children’s program areas.
  • Enhanced accessibility and adherence to modern safety standards.

Consultations with the community are planned to finalize the library’s design. Following the library’s completion, the existing visitor information centre will transition into the current library space.

The array of projects signifies a rejuvenation for Alice Springs, reflecting both community aspirations and economic potential.
