OC Transpo Struggles to Identify Cause of LRT Wheel Issues
OC Transpo is currently grappling with an unresolved issue involving metal flaking from a critical component of its Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. This problem involves the cartridge bearing assembly, specifically a roller bearing that connects the axle to the wheels. Troy Charter, the interim general manager of transit services, acknowledged the ongoing challenges during a recent technical briefing.
Investigation into Bearing Issues
Transit officials have confirmed they are unsure of the exact cause of this ongoing flaking issue. Charter stated, “We know what is failing, but the exact reason why it’s failing, we don’t have that information.” This concern echoes a previous incident in 2021 when a similar failure led to a derailment. However, Marko Kroenke, the city’s director of engineering services, noted that the current damage is appearing in a different area of the assembly.
- Type of Damage: The current issue affects a different section compared to previous failures.
- Speculated Causes: Potential causes include a bad batch of parts, contamination, or issues during maintenance.
Service Disruptions
Due to these complications, OC Transpo has been forced to operate single-car trains on Line 1, leading to overcrowded vehicles, especially during peak hours. Normally, two-car trains can accommodate about 600 passengers, but with the reduced capacity, commuters are experiencing significant discomfort.
- Current Train Availability: As of last week, only 18 cars were operational, with 41 out of commission.
- Repair Process: The repair process is demanding, requiring crews to remove heavy assemblies, which adds to the delays.
Safety Measures and Future Plans
Despite the issues, both the Rideau Transit Group (RTG) and train manufacturer Alstom have asserted that the trains remain safe for regular operation. They claim to have implemented containment measures and can monitor the assembly conditions acoustically. However, Charter has emphasized that they will maintain strict limits on operational mileage until more clarity is achieved.
Challenges in Component Supply
The OC Transpo inventory of cartridge bearing assemblies is currently at 68. Although the manufacturer can produce additional units, supply chain challenges pose significant hurdles. Hence, the organization plans to compel RTG to expedite assembly replacements and strengthen their mitigation efforts.
- Long-term Solution: OC Transpo is advocating for a redesigned bearing assembly capable of enduring greater rail pressures.
- Prototype Status: Alstom has a design in development but has not yet created a functional prototype.
Financial Accountability and Future Outlook
As the situation evolves, Charter indicated it is premature to provide a timeline for when normal LRT service will resume. Passengers will continue to experience single-car service with more frequent train schedules during rush hours. Furthermore, regarding potential refunds due to service disruptions, Charter noted that the decision rests with the city council, while ensuring RTG is held accountable for any service failures.
Overall, OC Transpo is focusing on navigating these challenges and determining the root cause of the bearing issues, rightfully prioritizing passenger safety and reliable transit service.
