Resolution Nears in Case of Missing Tourist Celine Cremer
The two-and-a-half-year search for Belgian tourist Celine Cremer reached a significant development recently. Human remains were discovered in the area surrounding Philosopher Falls, raising hopes for answers regarding her disappearance. This incident has left her family seeking closure after a long and distressing search.
Timeline of Celine Cremer’s Disappearance
Celine Cremer, a 31-year-old from Belgium, vanished during a bushwalk in Tasmania on June 17, 2023. Her last known location was near Waratah, a town on Tasmania’s west coast. Nine days later, her family reported her missing. Authorities found her vehicle at the Philosopher Falls car park, indicating it had been there since at least June 20, 2023, the date of her last mobile phone signal.
Search Efforts Undertaken
Initially, Tasmania Police launched an extensive search operation after receiving a welfare notice. The search involved:
- Foot searches along the track and surrounding areas
- Use of all-terrain vehicles, helicopters, and drones
- Rappelling down from the viewing platform into dense bushland
- Swift-water searches amid challenging conditions
Despite these efforts, the search was scaled back approximately two weeks later due to deteriorating weather conditions and no significant leads.
Private Search Initiatives
After the official search concluded, Celine’s family engaged private investigator Ken Gamble to analyze her phone data and identify unsearched areas. In December 2025, a renewed independent search included friends of Ms. Cremer and volunteers, driven by the coverage on Gamble’s social media and YouTube channel.
Breakthroughs in the Search
On December 13, during this second search effort, Celine’s mobile phone was located about 300 meters from the walking track. Nearby, a water bottle and a garbage bag—possibly used as makeshift shelter—were also found, providing possible clues regarding her last moments.
Discovery of Human Remains
On December 27, 2025, search team member Jarrod Boys uncovered human remains approximately three kilometers northeast of the Philosopher Falls car park, alongside the Arthur River. These remains were identified as human by police after being confirmed by a pathologist. Celine’s family was notified of this significant find.
Next Steps
The Tasmania Police have stated that formal forensic testing is required to establish whether the remains belong to Celine Cremer. Inspector Andrew Hanson acknowledged the distressing nature of this development for Celine’s loved ones, emphasizing the importance of thorough testing.
In a poignant social media post, Celine’s mother, Ariane, expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the community while awaiting confirmation of the remains. As the investigation continues, the family hopes to soon receive the answers they have been desperately seeking.
