EU Tech Chief Warns of Overreliance on Foreign Technology

Concerns over overreliance on foreign technology have intensified in Europe. During a recent event titled “Europe’s Race for Digital Leadership,” EU officials highlighted the need for a strategic shift.

Viviann Virkkunen, the Commission’s executive vice president for tech sovereignty, emphasized Europe’s vulnerabilities during the discussion. She noted that the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have exposed critical weaknesses in the region’s technology and supply chains.

Partnership with the United States

While acknowledging the U.S. as a crucial ally, Virkkunen stressed the importance of developing Europe’s own technological capabilities. She remarked, “It’s essential for our competitiveness and security that we are not solely reliant on external partners.”

To enhance technological independence, Virkkunen proposed increased public procurement to foster the growth of homegrown technologies. She asserted that the EU should actively support its own technology firms through public contracts.

This initiative is championed by Stéphane Séjourné, the French EU Commissioner.
It aims to channel billions of euros in procurement contracts to EU businesses.
