Dozens of Nudify Apps Discovered in Google and Apple Stores

The rise of nonconsensual image manipulation software is alarming. Recent findings by the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) reveal a plethora of “nudify” applications available on major platforms. These apps, which digitally alter images to remove clothing, pose significant ethical concerns.

Discovery of Nudify Apps

The TTP’s report highlights the presence of numerous nudify applications on Google Play and Apple’s App Store. Specifically, the organization has identified:

  • 55 apps on Google Play Store
  • 48 apps on Apple’s App Store

These applications can render individuals completely or partially nude, often exploiting images without consent. Together, these apps have amassed over 705 million downloads globally.

Financial Impact

The financial implications are substantial, with these apps generating approximately $117 million in revenue. This figure underscores the demand for such unethical tools in the digital landscape.

Response from Tech Giants

In light of TTP’s findings, both Google and Apple have taken action to regulate these applications. According to reports:

  • Google has suspended several of the flagged apps.
  • Apple has removed 28 apps identified in the report, though two were later reinstated.

This is not the first incident related to nudify apps. In 2024, a similar report by 404 Media prompted action from Apple and Google.

Ongoing Availability of Controversial Apps

Despite these efforts, certain applications like X and Grok remain readily accessible on both platforms. Critics, including The Verge’s Elizabeth Lopatto, have pointed out the discrepancies in how various offending apps are treated.

While Apple and Google swiftly removed the ICEBlock app, they continue to allow the existence of X, which has been associated with generating degrading images. This inconsistency raises questions about the policies and effectiveness of moderation efforts by these tech giants.
