NYC Winter Storm Update: Schools Reopen, Mamdani Confirms All Streets Plowed
New York City is on the path to recovery following a significant winter storm that delivered nearly a foot of snow. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has confirmed that schools will reopen for in-person learning on Tuesday, following a brief transition to virtual education on Monday.
City Schools Reopen After Winter Storm
During a recent address, Mayor Mamdani expressed gratitude for the efforts of city workers. He stated, “As dedicated city workers mobilized across all five boroughs to clear our streets and keep New Yorkers safe, teachers and students came together for online learning.”
- City schools transitioned to virtual learning on Monday due to severe weather conditions.
- Approximately 500,000 students were scheduled for classes, though grades six through 12 were on a previously planned Professional Development Day.
- There were 400,000 virtual log-ons from parents, students, and staff on Monday.
Winter Storm Cleanup Efforts
Mayor Mamdani said over 5,000 sanitation workers deployed about 2,500 pieces of equipment. They worked tirelessly to apply brine, distribute tens of millions of pounds of salt, and clear all city streets.
“The strength of our response is a testament to all of those who put in long shifts,” Mamdani noted. He reassured residents that emergency services could operate safely, although snow accumulation remains a challenge in some areas.
Continued Snow Management
Department of Sanitation Commissioner Javier Lojan highlighted that some sidewalks still require attention. He remarked, “Those huge mounds of snow can’t stay at the corners; they need to be hauled away.”
To improve snow management, the city plans to activate large snow melting machines capable of melting up to 120 tons per hour. Residents are asked to be patient as normal garbage collection schedules may be disrupted in favor of prioritizing snow removal.
Community Response and Recognition
Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, praised Mayor Mamdani for his leadership during the snowstorm. “Mayor Mamdani gets an A for his first snow day. He led by example,” he said, further thanking educators, administrators, and families for their collaboration in ensuring a smooth transition to remote learning.
As New Yorkers await the full restoration of services, they can take comfort in knowing the city is actively working to overcome the challenges posed by the winter storm.
