Tempo Unveils AI Payments Protocol and Blockchain with Stripe’s Backing

Stripe, Tempo and venture firm Paradigm unveiled a new open-source payments protocol on Wednesday. The Machine Payments Protocol aims to let autonomous AI actors send and receive value in both fiat and cryptocurrency.

Protocol details

The network supports fiat and crypto settlements. It is built to work with Stripe’s existing AI payments infrastructure.

Tempo’s implementation runs on the startup’s own blockchain for now. The design allows extension across multiple blockchains and payments rails.

Tempo’s mainnet and funding

Tempo announced its blockchain went live after about three and a half months in test. The company previously raised $500 million at a $5 billion valuation in 2025.

Investors included Silicon Valley firms such as Joshua Kushner’s Thrive Capital. Tempo was incubated with support from Stripe and Paradigm.

Agentic payments and market context

Agentic payments describes autonomous software agents making payments on behalf of users. Technologists expect agents to pay for articles, buy goods, or retrieve datasets.

Tempo has positioned itself for this emerging market. The startup emphasizes fast payments and stablecoin support pegged to assets like the U.S. dollar.

Competing efforts

Other firms are building similar systems. Coinbase has a network called x402. Google issued a payments scheme in September that supports cards and stablecoins.

Visa also helped define technical rules for card-based agent payments. Cuy Sheffield, Visa’s head of crypto, told Filmogaz.com the protocol gives merchants a clear way to accept agent-initiated payments.

Leadership perspective

Matt Huang, Tempo cofounder and a managing partner at Paradigm, said the space is still early. He described the protocol as intentionally minimal and extensible, and told Filmogaz.com the team wanted something others could build on without permission.

Why it matters

The launch signals growing industry focus on machine-to-machine commerce. Firms expect agentic payments to unlock automated transactions across the web.
