York Rail Upgrades Conclude, Ending Weeks of Disruption

Rail services between York and Leeds have recently experienced weeks of disruption. However, the completion of critical upgrades now promises faster, greener, and more frequent train services across the North.

York Rail Upgrades Conclude

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) project commenced on Christmas Eve and concluded just 32 days later. This extensive upgrade led to significant service cancellations and required rail replacement buses during the construction period. Most trains did not stop at Wakefield, Westgate, and Leeds during this time.

Key Developments from the Upgrade

  • Installation of 70 new signals
  • Renewal of 3 km of track
  • Installation of eleven switches and crossings
  • Remodeling of tracks at Church Fenton
  • Realignment of platforms 3 and 4 at Church Fenton station
  • Construction of a new passing loop

Church Fenton was notably the center of these improvements. The changes there are expected to enhance overall line speeds, leading to reduced journey times for passengers. The new passing loop is also designed to allow faster services to overtake slower stopping trains, effectively increasing capacity and enabling more frequent services.

Statements from TRU Management

James Richardson, Managing Director of TRU, praised the effort of his teams, who worked tirelessly through challenging weather during the Christmas season and into January. He emphasized the importance of these upgrades in transforming northern railways.

“We are excited about the improvements made. They will contribute not only to better services for passengers but also support economic growth in the region,” said Richardson. He acknowledged the patience and understanding of the local communities during the upgrade period.

Looking forward, Richardson noted that travelers can expect even greater benefits by 2026 as more enhancements are planned for the rail network. The completion of this project signifies a strong start to the year and highlights ongoing efforts to improve railway infrastructure in the North of England.
