Winter Storm Shuts Schools, Malls in Rochester: Latest Closures Update

As a winter storm impacts the Rochester region, numerous closures have been announced for schools, malls, and other public venues. The storm is dumping heavy snowfall, leading to the cancellation of classes and early closures across the area.

Winter Storm Affects Schools and Malls in Rochester

The Rochester City School District has declared that all schools and offices will be closed on Monday. This decision comes in response to the severe weather conditions expected over the weekend. All activities related to the district have also been canceled.

Additional School Closures

Several other school districts in the Rochester area have decided to cancel classes for Monday, January 26. These include:

  • Penfield
  • Gates Chili
  • Greece
  • Rush-Henrietta

In addition, numerous private institutions, such as Aquinas Institute and Bishop Kearney, have announced similar closures. Monroe Community College and Finger Lakes Community College will not hold in-person or remote classes. Nazareth University has also canceled classes scheduled for Monday.

Weather Conditions

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings across much of New York State. Predictions indicate that the storm could bring 12 to 18 inches of snow, with some areas experiencing lake-effect snow into Tuesday morning. Subzero temperatures are also expected.

Malls and Museums Close Early

In light of the storm, several local malls, including Eastview Mall and the Mall at Greece Ridge, will close early at 3 p.m. on Sunday. This announcement comes from Wilmorite, the management company for both malls.

Additionally, local museums have modified their operating hours. The Strong National Museum of Play and the Rochester Museum & Science Center will also close early at 3 p.m. Other institutions, such as the George Eastman Museum and the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, will remain closed throughout the day.

Other Cancellations

Other organizations are feeling the impact of the storm as well. Various public libraries in Fairport, Pittsford, and Brighton have closed their doors. Some churches in the Rochester area have canceled Sunday services. The Town of Brighton’s farmers market was also called off due to the weather.
