Lerwick Captivates as Up Helly Aa Festival Makes Its Triumphant Return
Lerwick, a charming town in the Shetland Islands, is currently abuzz with the festivities of the Up Helly Aa Festival. This year, the event marks a triumphant return, captivating both locals and visitors alike. At the center of the celebration is Lynden Nicolson, the 2026 guizer jarl.
Lynden Nicolson: The Guizer Jarl
Lynden Nicolson, a 58-year-old veteran of the festival, is representing Knut the Great this year. He embarked on this pivotal role with his squad of 65, consisting of family including his two sons, Ryan and Logan, along with three nephews, two grandnephews, and two grandnieces. The group left Islesburgh early in the morning, fueled by a hearty breakfast.
A Unique Journey
Nicolson has had a long wait to achieve his prestigious title. Elected to the Up Helly Aa committee in October 2008, he is acknowledged as the oldest individual to lead the Lerwick festival. His anticipation culminates in a torch-lit procession, which he describes as a “once in a lifetime” experience.
Today’s Events
- Civic reception at Lerwick Town Hall
- Visits to local schools and care homes
- Public interaction at Shetland Museum at 3:30 PM (sold out)
- Torch-lit procession starting at 7:30 PM
The day’s festivities include a civic reception hosted by SIC convener Andrea Manson at Lerwick Town Hall. Nicolson is expected to be the subject of light-hearted jokes during the event. The torch-lit procession later in the evening will see Nicolson’s squad and numerous guizers marching through the streets, concluding with the traditional burning of the galley.
Community Engagement
The Up Helly Aa Festival not only serves as a spectacular visual event but also strengthens community bonds. The public is invited to engage with Nicolson’s squad at various venues throughout the day. Engaging with the local community is a cornerstone of the festival, showcasing Shetland’s vibrant culture.
As Lerwick embraces the Up Helly Aa Festival, it continues to demonstrate the importance of tradition and community spirit. With Nicolson leading the way, this year’s celebrations are set to leave a lasting impression.
