Pimicikamak Cree Nation Evacuates 79 Homes Following Military Assessment
The Pimicikamak Cree Nation in Manitoba has announced the evacuation of residents from 79 homes. This decision follows a military assessment conducted by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) regarding damage from a significant power outage that affected the community. Chief David Monias confirmed that evacuations are expected to begin on Monday.
Pimicikamak’s Ongoing Crisis
On a recent Sunday, Chief Monias expressed the urgency of the situation. He stated that evacuees will likely be relocated to Winnipeg or Brandon. The community had already faced tremendous challenges, with over 1,300 homes impacted by infrastructure failures following a power outage last month. This outage resulted in burst pipes and flooding, displacing approximately 4,000 residents.
Military Assessment and Limitations
After Chief Monias called for assistance, the military deployed a team of engineers and technical experts to assess the consequences of the power outage. However, their role was limited to evaluations rather than repairs. “They provided support and situational analysis,” Monias noted, explaining that the CAF was not equipped to undertake repairs on damaged water and sewer systems.
- Homes Impacted: Over 1,300
- Displaced Residents: Approximately 4,000
- Evacuated Homes: 79
Monias also clarified that the military did not have the mandate to repair broken infrastructure. Efforts for restoration will require additional experts, including licensed plumbers and carpenters. “We are still in need of help for repairs to floors, walls, and structural elements,” he emphasized.
Future Outlook
There has been no specified timeline for when the evacuated residents of Pimicikamak can return home. The Chief’s calls for further assistance from the military have yet to yield results. As the community grapples with this crisis, the search for necessary resources continues.
