York-Leeds Rail Upgrade Completed, Enhancing Connectivity

York-Leeds Rail Upgrade Completed, Enhancing Connectivity

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) has successfully concluded, significantly enhancing rail connectivity between York and Leeds. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at delivering more efficient, environmentally friendly, and frequent train services across Northern England.

Details of the Upgrade

The improvement works commenced on December 26 and spanned 32 days, primarily centered around Church Fenton. Key activities included the realignment of platforms 3 and 4, along with track remodeling aimed at increasing train speeds and decreasing journey times.

Major Enhancements

  • Installation of a new passing loop at Church Fenton, ensuring direct services can overtake slower trains.
  • Completion of 70 new signals for better train management.
  • Renewal of 3 kilometers of track.
  • Upgrade of 11 switches and crossings to improve operational efficiency.
  • Work on overhead line equipment to facilitate future electrified services.

James Richardson, the managing director of the TRU, highlighted the importance of these upgrades. He expressed gratitude to the local communities and passengers for their support during the upgrade period.

Project Impact

This upgrade marks a significant milestone for the railway network in the North. The enhancements are expected to enable economic growth and enhance capacity for future rail travel. The completion of these works will facilitate more trains operating along the upgraded route.

Operational Adjustments

During the upgrade period, over 1,600 train journeys were re-routed through Castleford. Additionally, approximately 1,400 rail replacement bus journeys were provided to minimize disruption for travelers.

Resource Commitment

The successful execution of this project required substantial resources, including:

  • 879 rail wagons
  • 45 engineering trains
  • Three large cranes
  • Three tamping trains.

Andrew Allwright, the TRU programme delivery lead for Northern, expressed satisfaction with the achievements around Church Fenton. He acknowledged the collaboration among industry colleagues that contributed to maintaining service for customers during the upgrade.

The ambitious projects planned for 2026 promise even greater benefits for passengers, underlining the ongoing commitment to improving rail service across the region.
