Hamilton Honors 20 Volunteers with 2025 Order of Hamilton Awards
The City of Hamilton recently recognized outstanding community service at the final New Year’s Levee, hosted by Mayor Andrea Horwath. The event took place at the Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre, celebrating the dedication of local volunteers. This year, twenty individuals received the prestigious 2025 Order of Hamilton, acknowledging their significant contributions to the community.
2025 Order of Hamilton Awards Presented
Mayor Andrea Horwath emphasized the importance of these awards, which were established by former mayor Fred Eisenberger. The initiative recognizes residents for their compassionate and dedicated service, often provided without the desire for acknowledgment. “In a city like Hamilton, countless individuals are quietly doing extraordinary things,” said Horwath.
A Tradition of Community Spirit
The Mayor’s New Year’s Levee tradition, rooted in community and goodwill, has continued for hundreds of years. This particular event was significant due to the cancellation of a previous levee because of a snowstorm, making it a cherished opportunity for residents to gather.
Honorees Share Their Thoughts
- Akbar Haidary, a recipient of the Order, expressed that recognition is not the goal, but it brings happiness.
- Helena Streun, the oldest honoree at age 95, was celebrated for her work with the Cancer Assistance Program.
Debbie Logel-Butler, executive director of the Cancer Assistance Program, praised Streun’s impact on the community, noting her mentorship of young volunteers. “Helena represents what Hamilton is all about — giving back to the community,” Logel-Butler added.
Celebrating Community Resilience
Today’s event shifted the focus to the vital role of volunteer work in Hamilton. As the city embarks on a new year, the gathering served as a reminder that the strength of Hamilton lies in its people.
