PRT and Westmoreland Transit Services Suspended Until Monday Morning

PRT and Westmoreland Transit Services Suspended Until Monday Morning

Heavy snowfall and deteriorating road conditions have prompted the Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) to suspend all bus and rail services. This disruption began on Sunday at approximately 5 p.m. and is expected to last until normal operations resume Monday morning.

Impact on Westmoreland Transit Services

In Westmoreland County, all fixed-route bus services provided by Westmoreland Transit are suspended until at least noon on Monday. This includes the cancellation of all Pittsburgh Flyer services for both morning and afternoon routes.

Route Restrictions

  • Route 1F and Route 4 will not service Adamsburg.
  • Route 5 will not service the Altman Road area.
  • Route 16 will not service Hecla.

Additionally, PRT’s Downtown Service Center will be closed on Monday. However, customer service representatives will remain available via phone and through the agency’s website.

Safety Concerns Raise Service Suspension

The service suspension follows a day of challenging conditions for public transit in Allegheny County. Several PRT buses were reported stuck in the snow by 5 p.m. On this matter, CEO Katharine Kelleman stated, “Our operators deserve to be commended for doing their best under very challenging conditions.”

Kelleman emphasized the need to prioritize safety, noting, “Continuing service could put both our operators and riders at risk.” During Sunday, some bus services experienced delays of up to an hour while several routes were unable to operate at all.

Cancelled ACCESS Services

On Sunday evening, PRT announced that ACCESS paratransit services would also be canceled for Monday. Earlier communication from PRT had suggested that ACCESS might operate with delays.

Additional Affected Routes

  • 6-Spring Hill
  • 15-Charles
  • 17-Shadeland in Pittsburgh’s North Side
  • 74-Homewood-Squirrel Hill in parts of Homewood neighborhood
  • P68-Braddock Hills Flyer and the Braddock Hills Shopping Center

As conditions are expected to improve, transit services will aim for a resumption of normal operations by Monday morning. Passengers are advised to stay updated through official communication channels.
