France’s SNCF Restricts Child Access on Certain Train Areas
France’s state-owned railway company, SNCF, has introduced a new premium train class, Optimum Plus, aimed at business travelers. This first-class section is designed to provide “a quiet dedicated space” for passengers looking for a special travel experience. However, the class comes with a significant restriction: children under 12 are not permitted.
Details of the New Optimum Plus Class
Launched at the beginning of January 2026, the Optimum Plus class will initially be available on TGV trains running between Paris and Lyon. This new section replaces the previous Business Première class and still accommodates standard and first-class carriages alongside it.
Access Restrictions and Controversy
- Children under 12 are prohibited from entering the Optimum Plus section.
- The move has sparked debate on social media and across French media outlets.
- Some criticize the policy as indicative of broader cultural attitudes towards children in public spaces.
The podcast Les Adultes de demain voiced its concerns online, stating, “A red line has been crossed and nobody is talking about it.” The absence of children in designated areas has raised issues about France’s declining birth rate and cultural tolerance toward children.
Cultural Reactions
Economist Maxime Sbaihi observed that this trend reflects societal attitudes where children have become less welcomed. Critics argue that the policy gives the impression that adult comfort relies on the absence of children. Sarah El Haïry, France’s children’s commissioner, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that such actions are detrimental amidst concerns about demographic sustainability.
SNCF’s Position
In response to the backlash, SNCF clarified that the Optimum Plus class is available only during the weekdays, representing a mere 8% of total seating. According to a spokesperson, “92% of seats during the week and 100% at weekends are open to everyone.”
Family-Friendly Initiatives
SNCF maintains that children are welcome on their trains, highlighting family-friendly options. Key initiatives include:
- Nursery areas on TGV trains.
- A program called Junior & Compagnie, which accommodates around 300,000 children annually.
- Attractive family fare options to encourage travel with children.
Despite the introduction of the Optimum Plus class, SNCF assures that it remains committed to providing comfortable travel for families.
