Elton John, the iconic British musician, has recently shared his unique post-operative experience following a double knee replacement surgery in 2024. At 78 years old, he has turned a challenging health battle into a distinctive fashion statement.

Transforming Kneecaps into Art

After his surgery, John requested to keep his kneecaps. This unusual request surprised his surgeon, but Elton was determined to repurpose them. He collaborated with jewelry designer Theo Fennell to create wearable art from his bones.

The Process of Creation

Fennell explained the intricate process involved. The kneecaps had to be dried out, resembling pumice stone. He painted them with acetate and polished them into unique pieces. The final result included a gold-framed pendant featuring a piece of Elton’s right kneecap.

Throughout his life, Elton has faced various health struggles. He has had several surgeries, including those for appendicitis and prostate cancer. In 2013, he rescheduled tours due to appendicitis, enduring significant pain to perform for his fans.

Managing Diabetes and Cancer

Since the early 2000s, John has managed Type 2 diabetes, which forced him to change his eating habits drastically. He shared his challenges with cravings, particularly for chocolate and ice cream.

In 2017, after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, Elton opted for surgery over chemotherapy. Unfortunately, he faced severe complications, nearly resulting in his death due to a rare infection. In his autobiography, he reflected on nearly losing his life while alone in the hospital.
