Arthur Smith Appointed Ohio State Offensive Coordinator, Reports Rapoport
Arthur Smith has been appointed as the new offensive coordinator for the Ohio State Buckeyes, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. This transition comes after Smith’s departure from the Pittsburgh Steelers, coinciding with Mike McCarthy’s agreement to become the Steelers’ head coach.
Arthur Smith’s Career Background
Before joining Ohio State, Smith had a challenging time securing a position within the NFL. He interviewed for multiple offensive coordinator and head coach roles but ultimately did not receive an offer. Specifically, he was in the running for the offensive coordinator positions with the Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Chargers. Additionally, he was considered for the Tennessee Titans’ head coach vacancy, where he previously served as offensive coordinator in 2019 and 2020.
Director of Ohio State’s Offense
Smith will succeed Brian Hartline, who recently accepted the head coach position at South Florida. His new role marks his first collegiate coaching position since serving as an intern at Ole Miss in 2010. The Buckeyes finished the 2025 season with a strong record of 12-2 and ranked 21st in scoring among FBS teams, averaging 33.4 points per game.
Coaching Philosophy and Achievements
During his tenure with the Steelers, Smith managed to improve the team’s offensive performance. The Steelers finished 15th and 16th in scoring under his guidance, marking their best outcomes since the Ben Roethlisberger era. However, his coaching style has faced criticism for an overly conservative drop-back passing game and inconsistent target distribution among key players such as wide receiver DK Metcalf and tight end Pat Freiermuth.
Looking Ahead at Ohio State
In his new role at Ohio State, Smith will have the opportunity to work with standout players like quarterback Julian Sayin and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. This pairing promises to add significant value to the Buckeyes’ offensive strategy moving forward.
