Royal Caribbean Ship Faces Major Issue, Cancels Upcoming Cruise
Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas is currently facing significant technical challenges that have led to cruise cancellations and altered travel plans for guests. The ship, which was set to return to Sydney on January 27, 2026, will now arrive in the late afternoon due to these unforeseen issues.
Technical Issues and Delays
The Anthem of the Seas experienced propulsion problems during its voyage, impacting its speed significantly. Initially scheduled to dock at 6:30 AM, the ship is now expected to reach Sydney by around 4:00 PM, causing potential disruptions for over 4,000 passengers onboard.
Details of the incident highlighted that the cruise visited destinations in New Caledonia and Vanuatu before this period of uncertainty. Currently, the ship is sailing back to Australia at 14 knots (approximately 16 mph), well below its maximum speed of 22 knots (25 mph).
Guest Notifications and Support
Royal Caribbean has proactively communicated with guests regarding the difficulties. Passengers have been informed of compensation options for adjusting travel plans. Notably, the cruise line is providing phone calls from Guest Services at no charge and complementary internet access for those without existing packages.
- Guests can retain their onboard packages for drinks and internet access until debarkation.
- All passengers are advised to keep their travel documents handy for a smooth exit at the port.
Compensation for Affected Guests
In addition to the logistical support, Royal Caribbean is offering various reimbursements to assist passengers with flight-related costs:
- Up to $200 per person for domestic flights.
- Up to $400 per person for international flight changes.
- Up to $250 per stateroom if an additional hotel night is needed.
Guests are encouraged to submit receipts for expenses to the Guest Relations team for reimbursement. Those who booked flights through Royal Caribbean will have adjustments made automatically.
Next Cruise Canceled
Due to the ongoing technical issues, Royal Caribbean has canceled the subsequent sailing of the Anthem of the Seas, which was scheduled as a 10-night journey around New Zealand. Guests impacted by this cancellation will receive full refunds, covering cruise fares and associated costs. Refunds will be processed within 14 business days.
Alongside the refunds, affected guests will also receive a 25% future cruise credit to use for bookings within the next year.
Nature of the Technical Issue
While the exact technical problems have not been disclosed, it is believed they relate to the ship’s propulsion system. Anthem of the Seas employs two diesel-electric Azipod engines, and an issue with either could drastically reduce its speed and performance, complicating itinerary adherence.
Previously, in March 2023, the vessel experienced similar propulsion difficulties that led to itinerary changes, though no cruises were canceled at that time. The engineering team aboard is working diligently to address these issues, although complete repairs will likely require the ship to dock for maintenance.
Conclusion: Royal Caribbean aims to resolve these technical issues swiftly, allowing Anthem of the Seas to welcome guests again in time for its next scheduled departure on February 6, 2026. Passengers are advised to stay informed regarding any updates from the cruise line.
