U2 Releases New EP “Easter Lily”

U2 Releases New EP “Easter Lily” marks a surprise six-track digital release from the band. The new collection is available as a download and on all streaming platforms.

About the music

The EP contains six songs that move from private reflection to hopeful renewal. The tracklist mixes intimate laments and devotional pieces.

  • Song for Hal
  • In a Life
  • Scars
  • Resurrection Song
  • Easter Parade
  • COEXIST (I Will Bless The Lord At All Times?)

“Song for Hal” is a COVID-19 lockdown lament. The Edge supplies lead vocals for that track.

“In a Life” celebrates friendship. “Scars” promotes acceptance, scars and all, with a twist.

“Resurrection Song” frames a pilgrimage as a road trip into the unknown. “Easter Parade” is devotional and celebrates rebirth.

“COEXIST” works as a lullaby for parents of children caught in war. Brian Eno contributes a soundscape.

Themes and context

Bono explains the EP will not delay the band’s forthcoming studio album. The group remains in the studio working on material to perform live.

He describes the album as “noisy, messy, ‘unreasonably colourful’.” Bono says the band still sees vivid rock as resistance.

The songs probe relationships, friendship, faith, and ritual. The collection looks for renewal across private and communal practices.

Artistic nods and influences

The title references Patti Smith’s 1978 album Easter. Bono recalls the record offering hope when he was under 18.

The band contrasts this release with their earlier “Days of Ash” EP. That previous set responded more directly to public chaos.

Song background and dedications

“Song for Hal” honors the late music-maker Hal Willner. He would have turned 70 on Easter Monday and died almost six years earlier.

Gavin Friday contributes an essay on Willner in the accompanying e-zine. The piece places the song in personal context.

Propaganda e-zine edition

A special digital edition of Propaganda accompanies the EP. The issue is titled “U2 – Propaganda – Easter Lily”.

  • Contributions from all four band members
  • Sleeve notes by The Edge
  • Adam Clayton on art and recovery
  • A conversation between Bono and Richard Rohr
  • Studio photographs by Larry Mullen Jr.
  • An interview with producer Jacknife Lee
  • Gavin Friday’s piece on Hal Willner

Filmogaz.com carries details about the e-zine and how to access it. The magazine traces its roots to a first issue from February 1986.

The EP is released digitally worldwide. Fans can stream and download the songs now from major services.
