Journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s Death Confirmed as Suicide in Review

On a recent Friday, authorities in Colorado confirmed that the death of journalist Hunter S. Thompson in 2005 was a suicide. This determination follows a review initiated by local law enforcement at the request of his widow, Anita Thompson. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced that new concerns prompted a thorough examination of the case.

The Review Process

The CBI began reviewing Thompson’s death in September after Anita reached out to Sheriff Michael Buglione of the Aspen area. She provided new insights regarding the investigation. However, the CBI has not disclosed the specifics of this new information.

During the review, investigators emphasized that Thompson’s body was not manipulated after his death. Interviews with family members and original investigators revealed that Thompson struggled with severe depression and chronic pain before his passing. According to Pitkin County coroner Dr. Steven Ayers, Thompson was in a significant state of physical and mental decline and had idolized author Ernest Hemingway, who also died by suicide.

Reactions to the Findings

Anita Thompson expressed her gratitude to the CBI for their thorough investigation, stating it allows family and friends to move forward with peace of mind. She highlighted the importance of clarity in the context of her husband’s untimely death.

CBI spokesperson Rob Low chose not to provide additional details about the concerns that led to the review. Sheriff Buglione also did not reply immediately regarding requests for more information.

Background on Hunter S. Thompson

Thompson, known for pioneering gonzo journalism through works like “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” passed away at his home, Owl Farm, in Woody Creek, Colorado, in February 2005. He was 67 years old at the time of his death. His remains were cremated and later spectacularly shot from a cannon as per his wishes, during an intimate ceremony attended by notable figures, including actor Johnny Depp.

The Investigation Findings

The review considered Thompson’s home , where much physical evidence had been destroyed because the case was not classified as criminal. Investigators utilized a bullet fragment found lodged in an appliance to reconstruct the shooting incident. Original photographs recovered by Anita Thompson indicated that the body was positioned in line with the bullet’s trajectory.

Buglione affirmed that he believes the original investigation was handled appropriately but recognized the necessity of an independent review. He expressed hope that the CBI’s findings would provide reassurance and clarity moving forward.
