Arman Tsarukyan Labels UFC 324 Interim Title Fight a ‘Joke’
Arman Tsarukyan, the top contender in the UFC lightweight division, is vocal about being overlooked for a title shot. In a recent interview with Demetrious Johnson on MightyCast, he expressed dissatisfaction with the interim championship bout scheduled between Paddy Pimblett and Justin Gaethje at UFC 324. Tsarukyan believes the fight is driven more by business interests than by sporting merit.
Tsarukyan’s Standpoint on UFC 324 Interim Title Fight
During the January 20 interview, Tsarukyan stated, “For me, it’s a joke that these guys are fighting for the belt when I’m the number one contender.” His frustration reflects the views of a fighter who feels he has earned his position through merit, notably after his victory over Dan Hooker via second-round submission in November 2025, which earned him a Performance of the Night bonus.
Tsarukyan’s Preference for the Fight Outcome
Tsarukyan did not hold back when discussing his preferences for the UFC 324 fight. He indicated a clear preference for Justin Gaethje, saying, “I hope it’s Gaethje, because I don’t like Paddy.” His concerns about Pimblett winning are rooted in potential long-term ramifications for his own title aspirations. “It’s going to be hard to fight him because UFC is going to push me back for a couple of years,” he noted during the interview.
Critique of Justin Gaethje’s Title Opportunity
While Tsarukyan favors Gaethje in the upcoming bout, he is also skeptical of Gaethje’s worthiness for the title shot. He stated, “Gaethje’s not that interesting – he barely beat Fiziev and they give him a title fight,” referencing the contentious majority decision victory over Rafael Fiziev at UFC 286 in March 2023. Tsarukyan characterized Gaethje’s record, noting his history of losses, including significant defeats, raising questions about the fighter’s current standing.
The Business Side of UFC Matchmaking
Tsarukyan acknowledged the business mechanics of UFC matchmaking when talking about his own title shot prospects. He said, “Yeah, it’s just business.” This acceptance of the nature of promotions comes with frustration. He expressed dissatisfaction at being asked to act as a backup fighter despite his top ranking, mentioning he would be ready to compete on short notice if called upon.
Looking Ahead
Tsarukyan is determined to claim the title, stating, “I’ll get my title for sure.” His journey has not been without obstacles; he withdrew from a scheduled championship fight against Islam Makhachev at UFC 311 in January 2025 due to a back injury during his weight cut. Despite these setbacks, he has remained active in grappling and submission wrestling competitions, continuing to train and prepare for his next opportunity in the UFC.
