Indigenous Community Develops New Housing in Edmonton’s Ice District
An Indigenous community from Ontario has acquired a significant commercial property in Edmonton’s Ice District, with plans for substantial residential development. The Wiikwemkoong community, situated on Manitoulin Island, announced the purchase during a recent press conference.
Overview of the Acquisition
The Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory purchased the Connect Centre for $65 million. This two-storey building, developed by Katz Group Real Estate and One Properties, opened its doors in 2022. Following two years of construction, it was listed for sale in September.
Future Development Plans
The community plans to build 35 additional stories of residential units on top of the existing structure. Chief Tim Ominika expressed the significance of this investment for the community, emphasizing its potential to support various future developments.
Community Benefits
- Funding for healthcare systems.
- Enhancements to transportation infrastructure.
- Housing options for both on-reserve and off-reserve community members.
City Support and Downtown Revitalization
Edmonton Mayor Andrew Knack described this investment as “spectacular.” He highlighted that the Wiikwemkoong community could have chosen any location but opted for Edmonton due to its commitment to reconciliation, including economic aspects.
The Connect Centre has permission for additional construction under its zoning, allowing for both residential and commercial use. Mayor Knack noted the addition of housing units will boost downtown vibrancy and safety, aligning with the city’s goal of increasing foot traffic in the core.
Recent Initiatives Supporting Downtown Growth
This investment coincides with Atco’s decision to move its Edmonton office downtown, bringing approximately 1,200 employees to the area. The city has emphasized revitalization efforts, extending its downtown levy as part of this initiative.
Overall, the purchase and planned development by the Wiikwemkoong community represent a significant step towards enhancing Edmonton’s urban landscape while supporting the community’s long-term goals.
