Pro-Palestine Activist on Hunger Strike to Refuse Water

A pro-Palestine activist named Umer Khalid is intensifying his hunger strike by refusing to consume any fluids, including water. Khalid, 22, has been on hunger strike for 13 days and plans to cease fluid intake from Saturday. He seeks to draw attention to his demands and hopes to prompt the UK government into action.

Demands and Background

Khalid’s demands include:

  • Immediate release on bail.
  • An end to alleged censorship in prisons, involving withheld mail and visitation rights.
  • An investigation into UK involvement in Israeli military operations in Gaza.
  • The release of surveillance footage from RAF spy flights over Gaza, particularly around April 1, 2024.

Khalid is currently incarcerated as a remand prisoner linked to Palestine Action. He is among five activists accused of vandalizing RAF Brize Norton in June, causing significant damage. The UK government has labeled Palestine Action a “terrorist” organization.

Impact of Hunger Strike

While the body can withstand a lack of food for weeks, the effects of dehydration can be fatal much quicker. Khalid stated, “The only thing that seems to have any impact is drastic action.” This highlights the serious implications of his strike.

Recent Developments

Khalid is the last remaining participant in a rolling hunger strike that began in November. Three other activists ended their protests recently, claiming success in gaining improved prison rights. Additionally, a reported denial of a defense contract to Elbit, Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer, has been interpreted as a win by these activists.

The British government has clarified that decisions regarding bail are under judicial authority and has maintained that prison welfare procedures are being followed. However, Khalid’s other demands have seen limited progress. An inquiry into British involvement in the Gaza conflict has previously been blocked by the Labour Party.

Concerns for Khalid’s Health

Khalid suffers from limb-girdle muscular dystrophy, raising additional concerns as he continues his protest. His family has expressed deep worry over his deteriorating health, with his mother stating the emotional toll of losing contact is immense.

Family and Support

Umer’s brother, Usman, articulates profound concern for his brother’s well-being, emphasizing Khalid’s commitment to his cause. Umer has expressed willingness to face the dire consequences of his protest. Friends and family continuously stress their support for him, reflecting a strong community behind Khalid’s efforts.

As his trial approaches in January 2027, the activist is determined to make his voice heard, despite the immense challenges ahead.
