Apple Reportedly Joining Forces with Intel for New iPhone Chips

Recent reports indicate that Apple may revive its collaboration with Intel for iPhone chip production. Analyst Jeff Pu from GF Securities believes Intel will start supplying Apple’s chips, leveraging its 14A fabrication process. This technology is expected to be ready for mass production by 2028.

Intel’s Role in Apple’s Chip Supply

Intel is anticipated to provide chips for Apple’s non-pro iPhone models, potentially the A21 or A22 series. However, TSMC will still be Apple’s main chip manufacturer.

  • Production of Intel chips to begin in 2028.
  • Collaboration focuses on chip fabrication, not design.
  • Apple transitioned away from Intel processors in Macs starting in 2020.

Historical Context of Apple and Intel Partnership

Apple’s previous relationship with Intel included supplying cellular modems for iPhone models from the 7 to the 11 series. There is potential for Intel’s involvement in chips for Macs and iPads in the future as well. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo speculated that as early as mid-2027, Intel might ship Apple’s entry-level M-series chips for specific Mac and iPad models, utilizing Intel’s 18A process. However, Kuo did not mention any plans regarding iPhone chips.

Benefits of the Collaboration

Apple’s partnership with Intel may help diversify its supply chain amid increasing competition for chip resources, especially given Nvidia’s rise as TSMC’s largest customer. This partnership aligns with the current U.S. focus on boosting domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Apple’s New Product Launches

In addition to the chip developments, Apple is expected to unveil a range of new products in the upcoming year. These include:

  • A smart home hub
  • A Face ID doorbell
  • A MacBook featuring the A18 Pro chip
  • A foldable iPhone
  • Augmented reality glasses

As Apple continues to innovate, the anticipated collaboration with Intel for iPhone chips and new products highlights the company’s commitment to enhancing its technology and production capabilities.
