National Trust Plans Cafe, Parking, and Trails Expansion Near Shrewsbury

The National Trust has initiated plans to enhance visitor experiences at Attingham Park, located near Shrewsbury. This proposal includes the creation of a new entrance, expanded parking facilities, wildlife trails, and play areas.

Proposed Developments at Attingham Park

The vision for Attingham Park encompasses several key elements aimed at improving accessibility and the visitor experience:

  • New Entrance: Access will be relocated to the B4394, adjacent to Atcham Business Park.
  • Visitor Facilities: The new entrance will feature a cafe, restrooms, kiosks, a kitchen, and a bike hire point.
  • Parking Expansion: An expanded car park will include electric vehicle charging stations.
  • Information Boards: These will provide insights about a nearby Second World War runway and aerodrome.

Trail Enhancements

The plans also promote the development of approximately 13 kilometers (about eight miles) of new and restored routes throughout the estate. These routes will include:

  • Wildlife trails
  • Cycle tracks
  • A wetland habitat area

Visitor Impact and Economic Consideration

The National Trust forecasts that, if granted approval, these enhancements may attract around 350,000 visitors annually by 2036. The overarching goal is to improve visitor flow and increase access to the area’s natural landscape.

Traffic Concerns

In response to these concerns, Shropshire Council’s planning officers have recommended approving the application. They argue that the development supports essential economic growth in the region. The final decision will rest with the planning committee.
