American Striker Signs with Nix Soccer Team

The Wellington Phoenix have signed American striker Mackenzie Anthony as a short-term injury replacement. This move comes after popular forward Sabitra ‘Samba’ Bhandari suffered a season-ending knee injury during the team’s first match of the 2026 Ninja A-League season.

Mackenzie Anthony’s Impressive Background

At just 24, Anthony has already showcased remarkable talent in her career. Last season, she had a prolific run with Shelbourne FC in the League of Ireland women’s premier division. In 25 matches, she scored 23 goals, making her the second-highest scorer in the league.

Before her stint in Ireland, she built a solid foundation at Baylor University and Michigan State University. Head coach Bev Priestman is enthusiastic about Anthony joining the Phoenix.

Coach’s Comments

“Mackenzie’s played for a very good NCAA team in Michigan State and then obviously went on to be one of the top goalscorers in Ireland,” Priestman commented. “She clearly has an eye for goal and finishing ability in and around the box.”

He added, “Mackenzie will bolster our forward line and will help us in this critical part of the season.” Her positive influence off the field was also emphasized as key to her signing.

Anthony’s Arrival and Goals

Mackenzie Anthony arrived in Wellington on January 22, 2026, and joined her new teammates for training immediately. She expressed her excitement about joining the club, stating, “I’ve heard so many good things about this club. I’m just excited to be a part of it.”

Having gained confidence in Ireland, she feels ready to take on the A-League. “At Baylor, I experienced more transitional play, which I am used to,” she explained. “I love taking on players one-on-one and am good at aerial duels.”

Training and Preparation

Since finishing her season in Ireland in October, Anthony has been training in Chicago with men’s players who are preparing to turn professional. “I feel good, healthy, and fit, so I’m ready to play again,” she said.

Future Plans and Debut

Mackenzie Anthony will wear the number 30 shirt for the Wellington Phoenix. She will be eligible to make her debut once her work visa is obtained.

Bhandari’s Recovery

Meanwhile, Sabitra Bhandari is preparing for knee surgery after her ACL injury. The club wishes her a smooth recovery and looks forward to her return for the next season.
