Mike McDaniel Interviews for Bills Head Coach While Chargers Await

Mike McDaniel is currently in the spotlight as he interviews for the Buffalo Bills’ head coach position. This meeting is scheduled for Friday, and according to insiders, if he is not selected, McDaniel is poised to take on the role of offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers. He met the Chargers on Tuesday, and while an agreement has not yet been reached, expectations are high.

At 42 years old, McDaniel has participated in several interviews this hiring cycle. Interestingly, he withdrew from a second interview opportunity with the Cleveland Browns scheduled for Wednesday, based on league sources. Additionally, he has also interviewed for the vacant head coaching position with the Las Vegas Raiders. Other teams, such as the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals, still have openings for head coaches.

Buffalo Bills Interview Process

The Bills’ leadership traveled to Florida to engage with McDaniel. They have also planned interviews with other coaching candidates. Comprising the list are:

  • Anthony Lynn – Washington Commanders Run Game Coordinator
  • Anthony Weaver – Miami Dolphins Defensive Coordinator
  • Grant Udinski – Jacksonville Jaguars Offensive Coordinator

These meetings are set to take place over the weekend. Notably, the Bills have also completed an in-house interview with their current offensive coordinator, Joe Brady. Following that, they interviewed former New York Giants coach Brian Daboll and Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo.

Importance of Josh Allen’s Involvement

Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen is participating in the interview process. His involvement is significant as he is a key player and leader within the team. According to sources, Allen will have considerable influence over the selection of the next Bills head coach.

McDaniel’s Recent Background

McDaniel’s previous coaching role was with the Miami Dolphins, where he was dismissed on January 8. During his tenure, he recorded a regular season record of 35 wins and 33 losses. The Dolphins made playoff appearances in his first two seasons but have since experienced the longest playoff drought in the NFL.

The Buffalo Bills’ head coaching opportunity arose following the termination of Sean McDermott. McDermott’s nine-year era with the team included eight playoff appearances; nonetheless, he never led the Bills to a Super Bowl. After a heartbreaking 33-30 overtime defeat to the Denver Broncos, owner Terry Pegula cited the team’s emotional response, particularly from Allen, as a factor in the decision to part ways with McDermott.
