Obed Vargas Joins Mexico National Team for January Friendlies

Midfielder Obed Vargas has received an exciting call-up to the Mexico National Team. He will participate in two friendly matches as part of Mexico’s preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Vargas’ Recent Call-Up

This is Vargas’ first national team call-up since playing with the Mexico U-20 team for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. As a promising 20-year-old, he aims to make his mark on the senior squad.

Vargas will join the team for training and games against:

  • Panama: January 25 at 5:00 p.m. PT, Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez Stadium
  • Bolivia: January 25 at 11:30 a.m. PT, Ramón Tahuichi Aguilera Stadium

Previous Achievements

Vargas earned his first cap with the senior national team in October 2024. He made a substitute appearance during a 2-0 victory over the United States. Prior to this, he had already been called up to the U-23 level.

Mexico’s World Cup Preparations

The upcoming friendlies are vital for Mexico as they gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They will kick off the tournament against South Africa on June 11 in Mexico City. The group stage continues with matches against South Korea on June 19 and the winner of the UEFA Path D playoff on June 24.

Vargas’ Performance at Seattle Sounders

Last season, Vargas showcased outstanding performance with the Seattle Sounders. He started all 41 matches across competitions, contributing six goals and seven assists.

Currently, the Sounders are in Portugal for their preseason training. The team prepares for the upcoming 2026 MLS season, which starts on February 22 against the Colorado Rapids at Lumen Field.
