Hydro-Québec Prepares to Meet Demand Amid Extreme Cold Wave

As extreme cold conditions approach Quebec, Hydro-Québec is preparing to meet increased energy demand. The province is expected to experience dangerously low temperatures starting Saturday and continuing into early next week.

Energy Demand Surge Expected

Hydro-Québec spokesperson Cendrix Bouchard announced that the utility anticipates the highest electricity consumption levels of the year during this cold snap. Peak usage is expected between Sunday morning and Wednesday morning. The province may come close to or exceed 40,000 megawatts of electricity demand, surpassing the previous record of 39,000 megawatts set on January 5.

Heating’s Impact on Consumption

Heating is a significant factor in energy use, accounting for nearly 50% of residential electricity consumption in Quebec. Bouchard reassured the public that while demand will be high, Hydro-Québec has the capacity and resources to manage it effectively.

Tips for Reducing Energy Consumption

To help alleviate the strain on the electrical grid, Hydro-Québec encourages residents to take voluntary measures to reduce energy usage:

  • Lower your thermostat by 1–2 degrees.
  • Delay hot water usage during peak hours from 6 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 8 PM.
  • Charge electric vehicles overnight.
  • Consider installing a heat pump, which can save up to 40% on heating bills.
  • Schedule the use of energy-intensive appliances for nighttime or evening hours.
  • Seal air leaks in your home to improve insulation.

These initiatives can significantly contribute to managing the province’s energy demand during this severe weather period. Residents are encouraged to remain mindful of their energy consumption to support the stability of the electrical grid.
